Where is Zambia?
![]()
Zambia is a land-locked country, lying in the southern tropic between 8 and 18 degrees south latitude. It shares borders with Congo (former Zaire) and Tanzania in the north; Malawi and Mozambique in the east; Zimbabwe and Botswana in the south; Namibia in the southwest and Angola in the west.
In the late 19th century, various parts of what was to become Northern Rhodesia were administered by the British South Africa Company. In October 1964, Zambia became an independent nation. English is the official language. The GNP per capita in 1994 was $350, classifying Zambia as one of the least developed countries (LLDC).
Repeated droughts, the prevalence of malaria and HIV/AIDS, and extreme poverty makes life extremely harsh for the people of Zambia.
